A unique blend of historical fact and engaging fiction showing the power of forgiveness.
In 1942, German subs are dispatched to the Gulf of Mexico to sink U.S. vessels carrying goods and fuel. While taking a late-night walk, Helen Mason—widowed by war—discovers the near-lifeless body of a German sailor. Enraged at the site of Josef Landermann's uniform, Helen is prepared to leave him to die when an unusual phrase, faintly uttered, changes her mind.
In The Heart Mender, a small town must prepare itself for the worst the world has to offer, and Josef and Helen must reconcile their pasts to create a future.
Author Andy Andrews has written a wonderful book filled with historical facts that are probably little known to many people. The author who found some artifacts buried in the sand, near his Alabama home, goes on a mission to find out who the items belong to and the story behind them.
The story of the Heart Mender is about Helen Mason, who widowed, finds a soldiers body on the shore while walking one night. She decides to help him and then learns he is a Nazi soldier. She puts aside her fears and hides him in her home while he recovers from his wounds. Helen learns to let go of her anger and get on with her life, with the help of Josef.
In this book you will find mystery, suspense, and a love story all rolled into one. I really enjoyed the story, and was intrigued by the history of it. I never knew that Nazi submarines were that close to American soil during this time period. I also enjoyed the story of Helen, and how she learned to let go of the past and to forgive in order to go on with her life. I would definitely recommend this book to others, and I hope that it makes it to the movie screen.
