It's Your Kid Not a Gerbil- book review and GIVEAWAY

I just love the title of this book!  It's Your Kid Not a Gerbil was written by Dr. Kevin Leman.  Dr. Leman has written many books on children and parents.  He has a way with words and it was a fun book to read.  Obviously from the title you can figure out what the book is going to deal with and I think most families will find the book a help.
Do you sometimes feel like a gerbil running on a wheel inside a cage as you scurry from place to place, chauffeuring your children from one endless activity to another? What if, for one moment, you could just step off of the wheel . . . and relax? How would you feel then? And what if that single moment could stretch into an hour, or even a whole day? It’s Your Kid, Not a Gerbil will provide practical solutions and helpful insight to get off the activity wheel so that you can put your time and energies where they really count: in establishing strong character and a love for home and family that will serve your kids well for a lifetime.
I know most people who have kids have felt at one time or another that they are just running from activity to activity with no real purpose- I felt that way last school year, even though we homeschool it's still easy to get caught up in every activity under the sun.  This year we are not doing as much running around!  Most times my kids would rather stay home and play than run and do errands anyway.
I recommend this book for everyone.  It's well written and has many helps throughout the book.
Giveaway
One reader is going to win a gift certificate to receive a free copy of the book It's Your Kid Not a Gerbil.  All you have to do is comment.  Tell me why you would like to read this book.  One comment per person.  I will choose a winner using Random.org.  The winner will be notified by email.  The giveaway will run through September 15th and end at 11:00 p.m. est.  Open to USA residents only.

***Disclaimer*** I was not paid for this review.  I was given a free copy in exchange for review.  I was also sent a free gift certificate to give to a reader.  Thanks to Tyndale!

Somewhere Along The Way by Jodi Thomas - book review and giveaway CLOSED

I had the great pleasure to read the second book in the series Welcome to Harmony by Jodi Thomas.  Somewhere Along The Way is a wonderful story that picks up right where the characters of Welcome to Harmony left off.  This time around there are more characters brought into the story as well as a little bit of romance and alot of mystery and intrigue.
Jodi Thomas is a superb story teller who's characters come to life.  Thomas has the ability to make you feel like you are in Harmony, Texas smack in the middle of a snow storm.

From Jodi Thomas:

Thanks for asking me to drop by and tell everyone about my thirtieth novel and what I think is the best one I’ve ever written. These characters came alive for me and I hope they will for you. So, lets step into the second book about a small town in Texas, Harmony called SOMEWHERE ALONG THE WAY.
In my new book I had a great time creating characters. In truth it was more like meeting them. I felt like they were so real, I just had to get them down on paper, nothing more.
The first one who talked to me was Gabe. He was a man shattered by what he saw in war and now only wanted to live lone without anyone, but he met Liz and couldn’t stay away. She was everything he wasn’t in life. She completed him and surprisingly, he did the same for her.

A few lines from Liz and Gabe’s story:
“You have any idea whose blue Mustang that is?” He pointed at a car parked on the side street halfway between the front and the back of the building. “Could be a stalker. That parking spot allows whoever’s in the car to see both stairwells. You should really park out front, Elizabeth. It’s safer.”
Liz slammed the trunk. “This conversation is over, Mr. Smith. Stop trying to frighten me.”
He grabbed her arm to stop her retreat, then let go an instant later as if realizing his mistake. “I didn’t mean to. I came to say I’m sorry about what happened the other night. I . . .”
Liz waited several seconds before she realized he wasn’t going to continue. “Let me make it easy on you, Gabe. Let’s try a multiple-choice question. A. You’re sorry you kissed me. B. You are sorry you stopped. C. You’re involved with someone else and figured your wife and kids wouldn’t approve. And of course, D. We should just be friends.” She moved away. “Oh, wait, we’re not friends in the first place, so forget D.”
He followed her, standing just behind her as she opened her car door. “B,” he said as she backed into him trying to open her door. “I’m sorry I stopped.”
She turned to face him. “Let me get this straight. You don’t want to be friends. You don’t want to talk or hang out. You just want to drop by now and then and kiss me.”
He was so close she could feel his breath. “That’s about it,” he said as he shoved her door closed and backed her against her car. “You interested, Elizabeth?”
“You’re nuts,” she answered.
He moved away. “Yeah, you’re right, but I’ve lived alone for so long, one kiss a week is all I can handle right now, and you’re about the most kissable woman I’ve ever met.”
He turned and walked into the shadows close to the building. “I had to give it a shot. No hard feelings.”
Liz had to hurry to catch his arm before he started up the stairs.

Another character who almost danced across my desk to get me to notice her was Martha Q.
Martha Q Patterson had been considered the town slut for so long she’d learned to embrace the title. When she was in her teens she’d take any dare. In her twenties and thirties, folks claimed she married half the eligible men in town and slept with the other half.
Which wasn’t true, Martha liked to remind everyone. Two of her husbands were from Bailee and one from Oklahoma City. But in the twenty years she considered her “marrying phase,” she did marry seven times, if she counted Bobby Earl Patterson twice, him being both her second and seventh.

Thanks for letting me drop by and thank you for reading. Writing is a fascinating journey, but if it wasn’t for readers coming along with me it wouldn’t be any fun.

Jodi Thomas

I highly recommend reading Jodi Thomas' books and I can't wait for book three of the series to come out!  I just had the opportunity to watch the trailer on youtube and hope it gives you a sneak peak at what the book is about:

About the Author:
Jodi Thomas is the NY Times and USA Today best-selling author of 31 novels and 8 short story collections. As of July 2006, she was the 11th woman to be inducted in to RWA Hall of Fame. She is also currently serving as the Writer in Residence at West Texas A&M University in Canyon, Texas.

The winner was chosen by Random.org and has been notified.

Being a mom of 4 kids I am usually the one that is going to go without that something special and because of that my makeup bag has been a little black case that I received in a diaper bag sample after one of the kids was born.  It was ugly and not very practical as it says enfamil all over it.  Not something you get excited about.  All of that has changed because I had the great opportunity to review a beautiful Vemayca Cosmetic Bag.
Vemayca bags are chic, irresistibly soft and sumptuous featuring a removable Soft Pearl Liner.
The bag which comes in Red Amore or Charcoal mink features:

  • Generous central compartment for your favorite beauty and personal items

  • Two large zippered side pockets for additional storage and organization

  • Light-colored silver satin lining, making the contents highly visible

  • Custom metal zipper pulls that are easy to grip
  • Flat bottom so the Vemayca cosmetic bag stays upright
  • Super soft and and lightweight
  • Size: measures approximately 9 inches wide, 6 inches high and 2 inches deep

They can be purchased for 35.00 and you can buy the liners for 10.00 for a pack of 3.  I cannot wait for our next getaway so I can proudly pack my Vemayca cosmetic bag!   The Vemayca bag can also be used for other things besides cosmetics, you can carry your electronics in it for travel, throw some stuff in there for the kids (small toys, crayons, paper).  Really the possibilities are endless.

 Meet the creator of Vemayca:
Vemayca Cosmetic bags were created by Veronica Mayo, a mom and a busy business executive.  Veronica was frustrated with her cosmetic bag always being dirty from her makeup and she decided to quit the corporate world and design her own cosmetic bag.   The result is a beautiful cosmetic bag that anyone would be proud to own.

ReUsies - Review & Giveaway - CLOSED

Do you ever get tired of buying plastic baggies for your children's snacks and lunches?  I recently came across a company with the most ingenious product called ReUsies.   ReUsies are a re-usable alternative to sandwich/snack bags.  Each bag is made from 100% cotton lined with leak-resistant nylon and are secured with Velcro closures.   There are tons of cute patterns to choose from.  They come in two sizes.
Snack size fits items like pretzels, apple slices, or half a sandwich.
Sandwich size fits items like a whole sandwich, bagel or a large portion of snacks.
Each ReUsie can be machine washed and dried, washed in the dishwasher, or for longest life simply wiped clean with a soapy sponge and air dried.

ReUsies was started by a group of moms from Seattle, who wanted a solution to plastic baggies. ReUsies is a great alternative to plastic bags, and a fun way to pack your children's lunches.

I was sent both a snack size and lunch size ReUsie in the Going Green pattern.   I have to tell you this is one of those products that you think Why didn't I think of this!  It really is a great way to pack your children's snacks and lunches without using plastic bags, plus they are super cute!
I love the fact that they Velcro, which makes it easy for little hands to open.  And most of all I love that you can machine wash or throw them in the dishwasher.

ReUsies can be purchased online for 6.95 for the snack size and 8.75 for the lunch size.  If you think of how many plastic baggies you buy and throw away, these are really good prices.  Right now they offer free shipping on three or more ReUsies.

Hidden In My Heart CD -review and giveaway - CLOSED

Growing up I always listened to music as I went to sleep and I am happy that my children also like to listen to music as they go to sleep.  I recently came across the most beautiful music ever made.
Hidden In My Heart is a CD that is filled with scripture verses that are set to music.  It is entitled "A Lullaby Journey through Scripture", but it is unlike any lullaby music I have ever listened to, it is not your typical lullaby music.  The music is soothing and refreshing and I really can't tell you how beautiful the music is.

Hidden In My Heart is the creation of Jay and Trina Stocker.  Jay and Trina established BreakAway Music in 2007 with the goal of creating a record company that was devoted to producing quality, high-impact music for children.

The Hidden In My Heart CD features 12 songs that are scripture verses set to beautiful music.  I have enjoyed sitting in my daughters room at night listening to the music with her, and when she has fallen asleep I take it into my other girls room and they listen to it as they fall asleep.  The music is peaceful and calming and the whole time you are memorizing God's Word.  My favorite songs are Be Still and Know and I Will Never Leave You.

You can purchase The Hidden In My Heart CD online here for 15.95, if you purchase more than one it is 12.95.  You can also download it your MP3 player for 10.95.   You can listen to a sample of all the songs here.
This is really a CD that the whole family will enjoy and would make a wonderful gift to a new mother.

Win it!
Two of my readers are going to win a copy of Hidden In My Heart!

Beach Buddies Shell Craft by Creativity for Kids -Review & Giveaway- CLOSED

One way to stop summer boredom is to get your kids involved in crafts.  Creativity for Kids is the place to find all kinds of fun, kid friendly crafts.
We were given the chance to try out the new Beach Buddies Shell Craft kit.  It is so much fun!
About the Beach Buddies Shell Craft Kit:
•Use your imagination to turn 25+ REAL sea shells into a crew of creative crustaceans

•Complete set includes a tropical pallet of paint, glitter-glue, wiggly eyes, craft glue, dimensional paint and ocean inspired felt accents

•Full of fun, this is the perfect craft for rainy days, beach-themed birthday parties, summer camp, and small group activities

•Set includes enough extra supplies to use on shells you collect during your beach vacation

The kit is for ages 5 and up and retails for $16.99.

As soon as it came in the mail my kids were begging to try it out.  We waited for a rainy afternoon and then started creating our shells.  The kit came with everything we needed, shells, glue, paint-everything!  My kids had a blast creating their creations.
Word of caution:  This is for children ages5 and up because of small parts.  Also be warned that the paint is a permanent paint- my son (who is 3 1/2) spilled pink paint on the carpet, I sprayed Spot Shot on it immediately, most of it came up, but not all of it.  So I would recommend painting out doors and using old clothes just in case of a spill.
This would make a fun birthday party activity or sleep over activity.  The only thing I wish that they had more of is paint brushes, the kit only comes with one brush, so make sure you have extras on hand.
Overall I love this kit and  highly recommend it.
You can purchase the Beach Buddies Shell Craft kit here for 16.99.

Win it!

Jump Start - Review & Giveaway- CLOSED

We have just recently started teaching our older girls how to use a computer.  With so much bad stuff on the Internet readily available for children I was happy to find JumpStart, a virtual, educational place for kids.

The Creators of JumpStart:
For more than 15 years, Knowledge Adventure has set the standard in kids’ software by creating the finest educational products for use in the home and the classroom. In addition to our CD games, we’ve launched a browser-based virtual world at www.JumpStart.com, for kids 3-10 years old. Kids can create avatars called Jumpeez for themselves and explore magical worlds, discovering and unlocking games, videos and storybooks that teach everything from math to reading. Over the next year, we will continue to add more features, portals and learning games to this site.

What is JumpStart:
JumpStart is an award-winning adventure-based 3D virtual world that is super-personalized, wildly imaginative and really fun, but don't let that fool you - it also teaches math, reading, and critical thinking skills so kids get a real jump start in life.

I was contacted by Jump Start and was given a free membership for my children to try out the virtual world.
My three older children were very excited that they would be getting to play on the computer, and not a day goes by that they don't ask me if they can get on the JumpStart website.

Each person is given an avatar, they are able to name it, dress it, and even give it a home.  There are many things and places to explore in the Jump Start world.  We are slowly getting the hang of how it works.  And I am slowly losing my computer to the kids!
It really has been fun for all of us to try and complete the different levels and earn the coins.  Plus my kids are learning at the same time!
I think this is a fun and educational online website for kids and encourage you to give it a try.  Beware -you may lose your computer to your kids!

Win it!
JumpStart has offered a free 3 month membership to one of my readers.

Must Have Summer Product -SmartShield- Review & Giveaway - CLOSED

Summer is finally here and that means lot of time playing outside in the sun.  One thing that is a must for the summer is sunscreen.
SmartShield is an eco friendly sunscreen company that has created light and oil free sunscreens.

It all started with a freckle.   In 1992, our family found out Harl's freckle wasn't a freckle. It was a precancerous spot.

We were like most people. We knew we should wear sunscreen, but we didn't always do it. Sunscreen was always too messy, too greasy and too smelly. So, we set out to develop a sunscreen that people would want to use. A tough sunscreen that absorbed quickly into the skin, provided all-day protection, and didn't interfere with our everyday activities.
We wanted a smarter sunscreen: Non-oily, light on the skin and eco-friendly.
We found the perfect formula in 1995. And people love it. When they feel it on their skin, they're hooked.
No more mess. No more oily hands. No harsh chemicals.
Finally, The Perfect Sunscreen

Summer Product- Buzz Away- Review & Giveaway- CLOSED

Summer is here and along with the heat are the mosquito's.  I am allergic to mosquito bites and swell up in a ridiculous way, so I am always looking for ways to get rid of the pesky bugs.
Quantum Health has a great product called Buzz Away.
A little bit about Buzz Away Extreme
Our new Buzz Away Extreme is the most powerful natural mosquito repellent available. This DEET-free formula, in the spray bottle or handy towelette wipe, combines our essential plant oils with soy bean and geranium oil for the longest lasting natural protection available. Our mosquito repellent works for up to 4 hours against mosquitoes, up to 2.5 hours on ticks, and also repels fleas, gnats and flies. Non-greasy, pleasant aroma, great for families. Fisherman - did you know DEET repellents repel fish too? It's true - but not Buzz Away.

How it protects:

•Up to 4 Hour Protection from Mosquitoes

•Up to 2 1/2 hours Protection from Ticks

•The Buzz Away Extreme Formula repelled mosquitoes for up to 8.5 hours in USDA test.

•University of Guelph found the Buzz Away Extreme formula to be 92% effective after 3 hours (Compared to Off! Skintastic's 79%).

You can purchase Buzz Away here.  A 4 oz. bottle is 8.99 and they also have a 2 oz. pocket size for 6.99.
There are also handy towelettes for on the go!

I was sent a bottle of Buzz Away as well as the Towelettes for on the go.  So far we haven't had a lot of mosquito's, but I did spray the Buzz Away around the patio when the kids were playing outside.  Honestly I didn't care for the smell of it, but other than that we didn't have any bugs flying around and nobody had any bites.
If you are going to spend alot of time outside this summer than Buzz Away is definitely a product to try.

Win It!

Loblolly Lane - Women's & Girls clothing - Review & Giveaway - CLOSED

I love to dress my girls in matching outfits, and have all ways thought it would be fun if we could all match.  I found Loblolly Lane online and was so happy to see skirts and dresses for both women and girls.

The Creators of Loblolly Lane:
Eunice and Emily, two South Carolina girls who met while attending The University of Georgia

How Loblolly Lane got started :
Eunice created some dresses for Emily's daughter, Olivia. When Olivia wore the dresses to school, Emily was asked constantly about the dresses and where they could be purchased. Emily, a big fan of Donny Deutsch, instantly saw the Big Idea in this opportunity. She and Eunice decided to test out their potential in Charleston, S.C. where Emily lived. Whether it was the product, good selling tactics, or both, Emily sold all 30 dress samples out of the trunk of her car in one weekend. Within 6 months over 1,200 dresses and skirts were sold....a business was born!

I was so happy when Loblolly Lane said they would send me an outfit for each of my girls and myself.   There was a slight mix up in the order so I was given both the skirt and the dress for my girls.  I can not tell you how cute these are!  The skirt are made with an elastic waist band and are perfect for summer.   Each of my girls received a matching skirt to the one that I received.  We also received the matching dress to the skirt that I received.  The dresses are beautiful.  Made from quality fabric and made in the USA.

The women's skirts are sized XS through XL.  They are priced from 28.99  to 35.99.  They also carry womens' tunic tops, which are priced at 28.99 to 35.99.  The girls skirts and dresses are sized from 9 months to a size 8 girl.  They are priced from 23.99 to 35.99 depending on the dress style, and the skirts are priced at 19.99.
Sizing for women is XS(0-2) S(4-6) M(8-10) L(12-14) XL(16-18). The sizing on the skirts is generous which was nice for me, I ordered a smaller size! There is no measurements of the length of the clothes so take this into consideration.  My oldest daughter is extremely tall for her age, and so the dress was very short on her, but once we find some leggings to go underneath it she will be able to wear it.  All the skirts are about knee length, which is perfect for them.
I plan on getting their pictures taken together with them wearing there new Loblolly Lane dresses as soon as we find their brother some thing to match!

Where can you find Loblolly Lane:
Items can be purchased on the Web site and at design events. There are several sales representatives throughout the country who are listed in the contacts section of the Web site.
You can find them on Facebook and twitter too.
Win it!
Loblolly Lane has kindly offered one of my readers 1 item from Loblolly Lane!  The winner will be able to choose something from either the girls line or the women's line.

I "Like" Silk on Facebook!

Have you ever tried Silk products?  They have come out with a new product called Silk Pure Almond.  We were given coupons to try the new Silk Pure Almond milk and I thought it would be a good way to try something different for the kids.
From their website:
Smooth and refreshing with the flavor of lightly-roasted almonds, Silk Pure Almond Milk is great over cereal, in your coffee or straight up in a glass.  With only 60 calories per serving, it is rich in antioxidants.  It is also 100%  free of lactose, dairy and soy.

My kids love to drink milk so I told them we were going to try something new during lunch.  All four of the kids were given a glass of Silk Pure Almond Milk.  Three of the kids drank most of it.  Only one of my kids said they really liked it.  I thought it was bit sweet to drink straight up, but it would go great in coffee.   Silk is giving away two coupons to two of my readers.  One winner will receive a coupon for a free half gallon and also a Silk Pure Almond branded Chico Bag  and the second winner just gets a Silk Pure Almond coupon for a free half gallon.  All of my readers can sign up here and get a coupon for .75 off a half gallon.
Mandatory entry:

Touch'd - Review & Giveaway + Coupon - CLOSED

Is your skin ready for summer?  I have found a great new company called Touch'd  that offers handmade bath & body products.   Touch'd is a bath and beauty online store created  by Rachel Ferrucci.
Rachel couldn't find products to meet all the needs of her family. One product specifically, the organic sugar scrub, was created when her daughter had eczema and the doctors were prescribing medicated creams that seemed to be drying out her skin. She wanted to give her daughter relief without slopping medicated creams all over her delicate body. She researched and read every book on natural oils and how they can benefit our skin. She was successful in concocting the winning formulas in her home bathtub by making a product that was 100% organic and alleviated her eczema.
Touch'd products can be purchased on the Touch’d website and in select boutiques, salons, and day spas throughout Connecticut.

I had the opportunity to try the Sugar Scrub.  It is great!  The scent I received is Tropical Paradise, and it smells wonderful, a little fruity and not to strong.
I have been using the scrub for the past week.  I have the world's worst feet when it comes to dry and cracked heels so I couldn't wait to try it on my feet.
My feet haven't been this soft in quite awhile.  It really softened them up making it easier to get rid of the dead skin.  I also used it on my legs after shaving.  My legs always burn after shaving and I usually run to get lotion on them right away.  After using the Sugar Scrub on my legs I noticed they didn't burn after shaving, instead they were soft and not the least bit dried out.
One word of caution~ when using the Sugar Scrub on your feet, be very careful as they will be very slippery!
You can purchase the Sugar Scrub for $36.00 on line.  Other products include Bath Butter, Moisture Myst, Tub Tea Bags, and Foaming Salt Soak.

All of my readers can use the following coupon code PrinceandPrincess this is for 25% off your purchase and it is valid through July 15, 2010.
Rachel has also offered to giveaway one Bath Butter in your choice of scent to one of my readers!
